Barcode tracking system planned for drivers and public transport
Authorities are preparing to introduce a barcode-based verification system for drivers, vehicles and public transport in a major step aimed at enhancing public safety and preventing crime.
Police and the Safe City Authority have started work on generating security barcodes that will contain complete details of drivers, conductors and registered vehicles. The initiative is designed to help law enforcement agencies verify identities quickly and improve monitoring of transport services.
Under the proposed system, records of online taxi drivers, vehicles, motorcycles and public transport operators will be compiled in a centralized database. By scanning a barcode, officials will be able to access key information related to a vehicle and its registered operator.
Authorities say the technology will also allow verification of vehicles used for online ride-hailing services. Passengers and law enforcement personnel will be able to confirm whether a vehicle is properly registered and linked to an authorized driver.
According to police officials, the barcode system will make it much harder for criminals to enter the transport sector by posing as drivers. The initiative is expected to strengthen background checks and improve accountability across the industry.
In a related measure, character certificates have been made mandatory for online food delivery riders. Police have sought records from food delivery companies as part of efforts to identify individuals involved in serious crimes while operating under the guise of delivery workers.
DIG Operations Faisal Kamran said the new measures would help authorities identify suspects more effectively and enhance the security of citizens across the city.
