(Web Desk): As many as 275,000 families will get free solar home systems in Sindh under a Rs18.20 billion government scheme to expand clean energy access.

The Sindh government has launched a large renewable energy project under which 275,000 low-income families will receive free mini solar home systems. The initiative is worth Rs18.20 billion and aims to reduce electricity costs while improving access to power across the province.

Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the project is being carried out on the instructions of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He said the scheme mainly targets poor families, especially those living in remote and underserved areas.

According to the government, 132,000 families living in off-grid areas will receive the free solar systems. These households have little or no access to electricity and will benefit from reliable power at home.

Another 143,000 families already connected to the national grid will also receive solar kits. The government hopes the systems will help reduce electricity bills and lower dependence on conventional power.

Each selected household will receive a 180-watt solar panel, a battery, energy-efficient LED bulbs and a fan. The package is designed to provide enough electricity for basic daily household needs.

Sharjeel Memon said more than 15,000 solar kits have already been distributed. The provincial government plans to complete the distribution to all 275,000 beneficiary families by June 2027.

The programme is part of Sindh’s wider strategy to promote renewable energy and improve energy security. It also comes as more Pakistani households continue to install rooftop solar systems to cope with rising electricity prices and frequent power outages.

Pakistan has also become one of the fastest-growing importers of solar panels in the world. Strong demand for affordable and cleaner energy solutions has driven this rapid growth.

Officials believe the project will improve the quality of life in rural communities. They also expect it to reduce dependence on expensive grid electricity and diesel generators while supporting Pakistan’s shift towards clean energy.

The free solar home systems project could provide long-term relief for thousands of low-income families facing high electricity costs. If completed on time, it may also encourage wider use of renewable energy and improve electricity access in remote parts of Sindh.
