(Web Desk): Punjab offers free buses, rickshaws and ride-hailing services during Basant 2026 as authorities enforce tough safety and kite-flying laws.

The Government of Punjab has approved a comprehensive security and facilitation plan to ensure public safety, smooth traffic flow, and strict law and order during the three-day Basant 2026 celebrations scheduled for February 6, 7, and 8.

Under the plan, law enforcement agencies have been directed to take zero-tolerance action against illegal activities, particularly kite flying and aerial firing. DIG Operations Faisal Kamran issued a stern warning, stating that anyone involved in illegal kite flying or firing before, during, or after Basant will face strict legal action without exception.

To protect motorcyclists, a special safety initiative has been introduced. During the three-day celebrations, Punjab Police will distribute 1 million protective wires to motorcyclists. These wires will be installed on the front of motorcycles to reduce the risk of fatal accidents caused by sharp kite strings.

For public convenience, the Punjab Police have arranged extensive transport facilities. These include 6,000 special rickshaws, 500 buses, and 60,000 online ride-hailing vehicles to operate throughout the event. In a major relief move, the Punjab government has also announced free public transport, including government buses and app-based taxi services, for all three days of Basant.

According to the Punjab Home Department, the ban on kite flying remains enforced under the Punjab Regulation of Kite Flying Act 2025. However, limited permission has been granted for traditional Basant fairs within designated areas and timings from February 6 to 8 only.

Violations of the law can result in up to five years in prison, a fine of Rs 2 million, or both. Manufacturing, hoarding, or selling kites and strings may lead to seven years of imprisonment and fines up to Rs 5 million.
