(Web Desk): Pakistan Major Railway Reforms are transforming cargo operations and passenger travel, improving efficiency, comfort, and financial sustainability.

Pakistan Railways is undergoing a sweeping transformation under the government’s Major Railway Reforms program, aimed at improving freight operations, passenger services, and financial sustainability. Officials say the reforms are reshaping the national rail network, making it more efficient and customer-friendly.

Freight operations upgraded

Freight operations now serve as Pakistan Railways’ main revenue driver. New freight wagons have been inducted, dedicated freight corridors are under development, and cargo handling has been modernized. Partnerships with bulk clients have expanded, online booking for freight trains has been introduced, and wagon operations are partially outsourced. These initiatives increased the average freight payload from 1,800 tons in 2023 to 2,400 tons in 2024, reducing turnaround times and boosting profitability.

Passenger services improved

Passenger trains have also seen major upgrades. Coach capacity increased from 15 to 19, while 10 new trains were launched nationwide. Enhanced amenities include modern dining cars, LED screens, water dispensers, and professional cleaning services on key trains like Shalimar Express, Pak Business Express, and Islamabad Express. Outsourced trains such as Green Line, Shah Hussain, Subak Raftar, and Rawal Express now offer premium services.

Modern stations and facilities

Off-board facilities have been upgraded at major stations, including escalators at Karachi and Lahore, free Wi-Fi, renovated waiting halls, new Train Dispatching Building at Lahore, and modern CIP lounges in Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Rawalpindi. Ticket vending machines, electronic information boards, wheelchair access, and concessional fares for students, senior citizens, journalists, and persons with disabilities are now available.
