New Zealand has announced significant updates to its post-study work visa framework, which will directly impact Pakistani students studying abroad. Starting in late 2026, two major changes will reshape how international graduates transition from education to employment.
These reforms aim to provide more structured pathways for students while addressing gaps in existing visa categories.
Short-Term Graduate Work Visa Introduced
A key highlight of the new policy is the introduction of a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, designed for students who do not qualify for a long-term Post Study Work Visa.
Key Features:
- Up to 6 months of open work rights
- Permission to work for any employer
- Opportunity to transition to long-term visas such as the Accredited Employer Work Visa
This visa allows graduates to remain in the country temporarily while searching for employment.
Eligibility Criteria for Short-Term Work Visa
To qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a qualification at Level 5–7 under New Zealand’s qualification framework
- Complete at least 24 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand
- Be enrolled in a course not eligible for PSWV
Additional conditions include:
- Proof of at least NZD 5,000 in funds
- Health checks (if applicable)
- No prior use of this visa or a Post Study Work Visa
- Approval for government-funded scholarship students
Certain courses such as English language, foundation, and bridging programs are excluded.

Strict Conditions and Limitations
While the visa offers flexibility, it comes with restrictions:
- No self-employment or business ownership allowed
- Employment must be under a formal contract
- No family sponsorship permitted
- Valid only once, with no extension option
- Application must be submitted within 3 months of student visa expiry
The visa is intended as a temporary transition pathway, requiring graduates to secure skilled employment to move to a longer-term visa.
Expanded Post Study Work Visa (PSWV) Eligibility
The New Zealand has also expanded eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa (PSWV):
- Students completing a Graduate Diploma (Level 7) will now qualify
- Visa duration will align with study length, up to 1 year maximum
- The visa will be granted only once
This expansion provides a clearer and more accessible pathway for international students seeking long-term opportunities.
Benefits for Pakistan Students
These updates are particularly relevant for Pakistan students, who are among the growing number of international applicants to New Zealand.
Benefits include:
- More flexible transition from study to work
- Additional time to secure employment
- Expanded eligibility for post-study employment pathways
- Better family support options under PSWV
Family Support Under PSWV
Unlike the short-term visa, the expanded PSWV offers:
- Ability to support a partner for a work or visitor visa
- Eligibility for children to apply for visitor or student visas
- Subject to standard immigration rules and approvals
This makes the PSWV a more comprehensive option for graduates planning long-term settlement.
Policy Objective: Bridging Visa Gaps
The New Zealand government aims to:
- Provide a temporary solution for non-PSWV eligible graduates
- Expand opportunities for skilled international students
- Strengthen pathways from education to employment
- Address gaps in the current immigration system
These changes reflect a balanced approach to managing international education and workforce needs.
