Mahmood Khan Achakzai heads the Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP) and is chairman of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP). He was nominated for the post by PTI founder Imran Khan.
The Speaker of the National Assembly, Ayaz Sadiq, approved the appointment after completing legal checks and verifying lawmakers’ signatures. An official notification was later issued.

After the approval, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar and senior leader Aamir Dogar were called to the Speaker’s chamber. A PTI delegation met the Speaker and received the formal notification confirming Achakzai’s new role.

The move came after former opposition leader Omar Ayub was disqualified and lost his National Assembly seat. Following this, Imran Khan proposed Achakzai as the new opposition leader.
PTI had earlier submitted a written request for Achakzai’s appointment. The application carried signatures of more than 70 National Assembly members and had been under review for several days.
Political observers say the appointment could help restart talks between the government and the opposition. Imran Khan has authorized Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Allama Nasir Abbas to lead negotiations for the opposition side.
