Chief Justice of Islamabad High Court Justice Amir Farooq heard the petition regarding Imran Khan’s request for meetings with his personal doctor, wife, and phone calls with his sons. Jail superintendent Ghafoor Anjum and Imran Khan s lawyer Faisal Chaudhry were present in court.
The chief justice asked the jail superintendent what facilities had been provided to the petitioner. The superintendent replied that Imran Khan was receiving all facilities under Category B, including access to a TV and newspapers. A personal cook had also been assigned, and visits were allowed twice a week, though they sometimes facilitated additional meetings. Before Imran Khan’s sentence, his wife Bushra Bibi had been allowed to meet him, and after the sentence, meetings were also arranged.
The chief justice inquired about the phone call request with his children. The jail superintendent explained that international calls could not be made due to the large number of prisoners, including 25 foreign nationals. Allowing such calls could set a precedent, and under jail rules and government policy, international calls are not allowed. However, prisoners are given a code to make local calls.
The jail superintendent further explained that meetings were being held regularly, but they might be postponed if there was a trial. The Chief Justice commented that there were many people with such requests, and he did not want to intervene in this matter.
Imran Khan’s lawyer Faisal Chaudhry mentioned that private doctors were not allowed to meet him, and that although Khan was allowed six newspapers, only two were provided. The jail superintendent responded that Adiala Jail had some of the best doctors, who checked Imran Khan daily. He also confirmed that Khan had access to 16 TV channels and two newspapers. The court then concluded the petition with instructions to provide the requested jail facilities.
