He was the father of former Federal Minister Hamad Azhar and had a long political journey. Mian Muhammad Azhar began his political career as an activist and became the Mayor of Lahore from 1987 to 1991. He served as the Governor of Punjab from 1990 to 1992.
Azhar initially started his political career with the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), but during the exile of Nawaz Sharif, he became a part of the Pakistan Muslim League (Q).
