MULTAN (Web Desk): In a major decision, the District and Sessions Court in Multan has sentenced Awami Raj Party chief and former MNA Jamshed Dasti to a total of 17 years in prison in the fake degree case.

The case was filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan, which accused Dasti of contesting the 2008 elections with a BA degree from a madrassa that was never verified by the Higher Education Commission. Officials said this act violated Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution.

ECP authorities argued that Dasti should be disqualified for hiding the truth. They pointed out that he attached madrassa degrees with his nomination papers, but no record of those qualifications was found.

The court handed down punishments under multiple sections: three years under Section 82, two years under Section 420, seven years under Section 468, two years and a fine of Rs10,000 under Section 471, and three years under Section 206.

It is worth noting that this case began after National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq sent a reference to the Election Commission, raising serious doubts about Dasti’s academic qualifications.

After reviewing the matter, the ECP declared his educational documents fake and disqualified him from holding public office.

This ruling marks one of the harshest punishments given to a politician over fake academic records. For years, questions about degrees have haunted Pakistan’s politics, but this verdict sends a strong message. Jamshed Dasti’s downfall shows that hiding the truth can end a career and even lead to years in prison. It may push other politicians to think twice before submitting unverified documents.
