(Web Desk): Britain is considering scrapping visa fees for highly skilled professionals in a bold effort to boost economic growth.

The plan is being reviewed at 10 Downing Street and the Treasury, sources reveal.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Global Talent Task Force is examining proposals to attract world-class scientists, academics, and digital experts to the UK.

One major option under review is to completely waive visa fees for graduates from the world’s top five universities or those who have won internationally recognised awards.

This discussion gained momentum after the United States raised the fee for its popular H-1B visa to a staggering $100,000, sparking concerns that top global talent may look elsewhere for opportunities.

Currently, the UK’s Global Talent Visa costs each applicant £766 ($1,030), and the same fee also applies to spouses and children. Critics argue this makes Britain less competitive compared to rivals.

Supporters of the reforms say lowering or scrapping fees would give the UK an edge in the global race for talent and innovation. However, neither the Treasury nor Downing Street has officially commented on the plan so far.

Britain is clearly trying to seize an opportunity created by the US visa fee hike. By offering lower costs or even free visas, the UK could become a magnet for the brightest global minds. If this plan succeeds, it may shift the balance of innovation and research towards Britain, while America risks losing its edge. But the real test will be whether the proposal turns into actual policy.
