(Web Desk): Pakistan Railways has expanded free Wi-Fi services to major stations as part of its ongoing digital upgrade under the Rabta initiative.

The development was shared during a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who directed authorities to accelerate modernization efforts and seek assistance from international legal and economic experts for regional connectivity projects.

Officials briefed the meeting that seven digital portals are now operational, fifty-six trains have been integrated into the digital system, and fifty-four stations have been digitized. Free Wi-Fi is already available at key stations in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Faisalabad, while forty-eight additional stations are expected to receive the service by December.

The department has also rolled out an online freight booking system and launched a pilot digital weighing bridge at Karachi City Railway Station, with plans to expand the system to Pipri, Karachi Cantonment, Port Qasim, Lahore, and Rawalpindi.

To strengthen passenger security, 148 AI-powered surveillance cameras have been installed at Rawalpindi Railway Station. ATM machines are also being set up at major stations, while cleaning services have been outsourced and waiting areas upgraded as part of broader efforts to improve passenger facilities.
