KARACHI: (Suno News) Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has presented a resolution in the Sindh Assembly against the construction of new canals.

Speaking in the Sindh Assembly, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said that the Water Apportionment Agreement 1991 guaranteed the distribution of water, adding that no canal, including the Cholistani Canal, can be built on the Indus River without Sindh s consent.

He further mentioned that due to water scarcity, the Indus Delta is being destroyed, and under the 1991 agreement, no canal can be constructed upstream on the Indus River.

Murad Ali Shah emphasized that the assembly rejects the construction of six canals, including the Cholistani Canal. He stated that consultation with the Sindh government is essential for any canal, whether it be the Cholistani or any other. The assembly also demands that the federal government and IRSA consult with Sindh on this matter. No construction against the 1991 agreement should be approved.

On the other hand, Minister for Irrigation Jam Khan Shoro stated that the water issue is of great importance to them, and the seriousness of the matter is such that the Chief Minister himself presented the resolution. He added that the People s Party has always represented the water issues of Sindh. He also recalled that in the past, the construction of the Kala Bagh Dam was proposed.

Jam Khan Shoro mentioned that when the dam was announced, Benazir Bhutto led protests, and the people staged a sit-in, ultimately forcing the decision to be reversed.
