LAHORE: Punjab has unveiled Pakistan’s first AI-enabled driving test vehicle, a pioneering step toward modernizing the province’s licensing system. The initiative was introduced on the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

Developed by the Traffic Police, the smart car is designed to make driving tests transparent, automated, and free from human bias. According to DIG Traffic Waqas Nazir, the vehicle is equipped with advanced cameras and sensors that evaluate candidates’ driving skills without the need for manual supervision.

The interior features a facial recognition camera and a biometric fingerprint scanner, while four exterior cameras record every move during the test. Once a candidate enters the car, the system activates automatically, offering instructions, running a countdown timer, and checking essential safety measures such as fastening the seatbelt and applying the handbrake.

The system is also capable of automatically declaring failures in cases where a candidate makes critical errors—for instance, engaging reverse gear more than once.
