(Web Desk): In a groundbreaking move toward gender equality, Peshawar’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system has appointed its first-ever female driver, 37-year-old Ruth Maryam.

Peshawar s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, also known as Zu Peshawar, has achieved a significant milestone by hiring its first female bus driver, marking a historic moment for women s empowerment in the city s public transportation sector.

During an interview Maryam shared that no profession is out of reach for women if they pursue it with dedication and hard work. She described her new role as a great honor and expressed hope that her achievement will inspire more women to enter Pakistan’s male-dominated transport industry.

Government officials praised the milestone as a reflection of their commitment to inclusive employment.

Maryam’s presence behind the wheel not only ensures the safe daily travel of hundreds of passengers but also marks a powerful challenge to traditional gender norms in the region.

This event also highlights the BRT s commitment to inclusivity and providing opportunities for women in non-traditional roles.

The BRT system in Peshawar has been lauded for its positive impact on female ridership, with figures increasing from a mere 2% before its implementation to 27% after. The system s design and operation prioritize women s safety and comfort, including features like designated priority seating and anti-harassment messages displayed throughout the stations and buses.

Now the introduction of the first female bus driver is a further step towards gender equality within the BRT, encouraging more women to participate in the workforce and utilize public transportation with confidence. This initiative is part of a broader effort to create a more inclusive and accessible transportation system for all residents of Peshawar.
