Lahore has received its first demo vehicle of the Super Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (SRT) system. Nicknamed a “subway on wheels,” it moves like a train but drives on regular roads and no railway lines needed.
This high-tech metro uses virtual track technology, which means it follows a digital path using GPS, sensors, and smart mapping tools.
The battery-powered vehicle is fully electric, and it runs quietly without any harmful fuel. A pilot project has already been launched near Lahore airport, with Pakistani and Chinese officials attending the ceremony to show support for this game changing innovation.

The system is already working in other countries like China, UAE, Malaysia, and Turkey, and now Pakistan is joining the smart transport revolution. It’s cheaper than traditional metros because it doesn’t need heavy rail infrastructure, and it can carry a large number of passengers making it perfect for Pakistan’s busy cities.
Meanwhile in Karachi, progress on the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) has hit delays. Sindh’s Transport Minister Sharjeel Memon said that shifting underground utilities is slowing the work, and the project may not finish until 2026. He also admitted that citizens have every right to be upset due to the traffic mess caused by the construction.
