KARACHI (Irshad Sanjarani): Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has taken a major step towards addressing its pilot shortage by announcing the results of the recent written examination.

In an effort to tackle the ongoing shortage of pilots, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has advanced its recruitment process by concluding the written examination phase. According to sources, the results of the written test for pilot recruitment have been finalized, with 42 candidates successfully passing the examination.

The next stage of the recruitment process involves practical flying tests, which will be conducted by PIA in the coming days. Candidates who clear the flying tests will then appear before the PIA Board for final interviews, sources added.

The recruitment drive originally began five months ago when PIA advertised pilot vacancies in response to a severe pilot shortage. The airline has been facing a talent drain in recent years, with over 100 pilots leaving PIA to join other national and international airlines due to significantly higher pay packages abroad. Reports suggest that salaries in regional airlines are nearly double compared to what PIA offers its captains.

PIA s current need for pilots is especially urgent as it prepares to resume and expand flight operations to European countries and the UK. To meet this demand, around 300 applications were received for the First Officer positions. The airline aims to reduce its current shortfall, though even after this round of recruitment, PIA will still be short by at least 72 pilots.

The national carrier has been actively working to replenish its crew strength amid operational challenges and an aging workforce. This recruitment initiative aims to ensure smoother flight operations and bolster the airline’s long-term capacity.

The selection process for pilots is being closely monitored to ensure transparency and merit, especially following past controversies related to pilot licensing. The Ministry of Aviation is also reportedly being kept in the loop as part of efforts to restore international confidence in Pakistan’s aviation sector.

Further developments are expected as candidates proceed through the final stages of assessment.
