In the video, an individual expressed shock after learning they had been officially declared deceased at a NADRA office. Responding to the incident, NADRA clarified that the registration of births, deaths, and marital status changes is handled under provincial laws by the relevant Union Councils, not NADRA itself.
NADRA emphasised that it only updates its records and issues identity documents based on the data provided by Union Councils, in accordance with federal law.
In the specific case referenced in the viral video, NADRA explained that a close relative of the individual had registered the death at the concerned Union Council. NADRA then updated its records based on that official entry.
The authority reiterated that the sole responsibility for recording life events lies with Union Councils, while NADRA s role is limited to reflecting those changes in national identity documentation.
In a broader disclosure, NADRA revealed that over 7 million deaths have been registered across Union Councils nationwide. However, in many cases, families fail to inform NADRA or request cancellation of the deceased s identity cards.
To resolve this, NADRA has begun sending text message alerts to the registered mobile numbers of individuals or their relatives, advising them to visit a nearby NADRA office to cancel the ID card if the death is accurate.
In cases of incorrect death registrations, families have been instructed to contact the relevant Union Council to amend the records accordingly.
