Lahore to launch first electric tram with auto-navigation
(Web Desk): Lahore is set to launch its first modern electric tram, equipped with automatic navigation and sensor-based guidance systems.

Marking a major step towards smart and eco-friendly urban transport, Lahore is all set to launch its first electric tram.

As part of the pilot project, the tram will initially be operated manually under a driver’s supervision. Officials say the tram is fully capable of operating autonomously in the future. If the pilot phase proves successful, the automated system will be introduced in phases, with the possibility of full self-driving mode once government approvals, infrastructure upgrades, and safety systems are in place.

The first electric tram imported from China is currently being assembled at the Ali Town depot. Uniquely, the tram can operate without traditional rail tracks. The pilot route will run from Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura along Canal Road, offering the service free of cost to the public during the trial.

The tram boasts impressive efficiency, capable of traveling 25–27 kilometers on just a 10-minute charge. Each tram can accommodate over 250 passengers and comes with Wi-Fi, CCTV cameras, air-conditioning, and smart charging facilities.

Eco-friendly and noise-free, the electric tram is designed to reduce fuel consumption and pollution. Authorities confirm that if the pilot is successful, the project will be expanded to other cities across Pakistan.
