Recently, during a rainstorm in Lahore, Sajid Nawaz, an elderly man, used offensive language to criticize the government and state institutions. As a result, he was arrested, but later released due to a court order.
In an interview with a private news website after his release, Sajid Nawaz stated, “I did not commit any crime. Freedom of speech is every citizen’s basic right. I hope that my words helped the state understand the hardships of the people.”
He added, “A person going through difficult circumstances often says things in anger. We respect every institution in our country. The government showed great maturity by patiently listening to my words, and the state played a positive role by not taking my words negatively.”
Recalling his time in custody, Sajid Nawaz said, “The place where I was kept had a very good environment, and all the institutions were very supportive. I had no issues, which is why I have shared a positive experience. When you haven’t committed a crime, you feel happy.”
He continued, “I just expressed my emotions. I believe the state has a big heart, and they have proven that people in high positions are also big-hearted.”
Regarding the inappropriate words he used in his viral video, Sajid Nawaz said, “A person facing personal issues or other challenges sometimes speaks out of frustration. That may have been my first and last mistake. I believe no one should make such mistakes, and everyone should learn to control their emotions.”
When asked about rumors of being fired from his job, Sajid Nawaz declined to comment and said, “No comment.”
The case of Sajid Nawaz brings attention to the delicate balance between freedom of speech and respect for institutions. While he believes that his words were simply an emotional outburst due to personal challenges, it highlights the power of words and their impact. The government s response in allowing him to express his grievances peacefully shows a degree of patience and maturity, but it also raises questions about how public figures and ordinary citizens navigate sensitive topics in today s social media era. The incident sheds light on the complex relationship between expression, responsibility, and respect for authority.
