LAHORE (Web Desk): A special audit report has revealed major amounts of embezzlement in Data Darbar and other shrines in Punjab managed by the provincial Auqaf Department.

As per the audit, during the financial years from 2015 to 2018, Rs860 million (86 crores) was withdrawn from the accounts of Lahore’s Data Darbar. The sum total comes from 33 separate transactions; however, there is no record of where or how the money was used.

Furthermore, the report also revealed that in the Pakpattan Sharif Darbar, 48 suspicious transactions were made, which summed up to Rs190 million (19 crores). Similarly, these transactions lacked clear records.

The audit report also showed that the 600 commercial shops owned by Auqaf in Jhang and Okara were involved in alleged rental income fraud, which led to an estimated loss of Rs135 million (13.5 crores).

Moreover, the report divulged that hundreds of kanals of commercial land were leased for just Rs1 per year for 99 years. This is a major financial loss for the government.

The report showed that Rs35 million (3.5 crores) was withdrawn from the accounts of Baba Farid’s shrine as well.

The audit report has recommended that the financial activities of the Auqaf Department be investigated thoroughly. However, no official response has yet been made by the department.
