Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has instructed Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan to expedite the process for the project.
The Blue Line Metro Train is planned to span a 27-kilometer route, linking Valencia Town to Babu Sabu Chowk. Key areas such as Johar Town, Faisal Town, Garden Town, Kalma Chowk, Gulberg Main Boulevard, Jail Road, Ferozepur Road, and Allama Iqbal Town will be connected by the new train line, which is expected to serve more than 250,000 passengers daily.
The government has set a three-year deadline to complete the Blue Line project, with construction utilizing advanced technology and heavy machinery. Tunneling work is expected to progress at a rate of up to six meters per day.
The project is estimated to cost over Rs600 billion, although the final cost will be determined after the feasibility and design reports are finished.
International financial institutions from China, Japan, and France have shown interest in funding the Blue Line Metro project. Previous studies by the Punjab Transport Department, including a 2016 study conducted by Japan s JICA and Turkey s Osmani agency, initially suggested a 12-kilometer underground portion. However, a more recent transport study in June 2024 found that the entire Blue Line route could be constructed as an underground project.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz officially confirmed the inclusion of the Blue Line Metro Train in Lahore s mass transit system just two days ago, emphasizing the government s commitment to enhancing urban transportation infrastructure.
