This groundbreaking meeting marks a significant diplomatic moment as army chief has been formally received honour at this level without having any political power.
The bilateral discussion, held around 1pm local time, lasted for nearly two hours. It took place shortly after President Trump responded to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion that the United States had no role in easing tensions between India and Pakistan during their standoff in May.
Trump firmly refuted Modi’s claim and used the occasion to highlight Pakistan’s role in maintaining regional peace.

While speaking to the media after the meeting, President Trump remarked, “I was honoured to meet him (Field Marshal Munir) today.”
When asked whether the ongoing Iran-Israel tensions were part of the conversation, Trump acknowledged Pakistan’s unique understanding of the region.
“They (Pakistan) know Iran very well, better than most, and they’re not happy about anything. It’s not that they’re bad with Israel. They know them both, actually, but they know Iran better,” Trump noted.
He further shared that Field Marshal Munir supported his perspective on the issue, saying, “The reason I had him here was that I wanted to thank him for not going into the war [with India].”
He also expressed appreciation for Indian PM Modi, stating, “These two very smart people decided not to keep going with a war that could have been a nuclear war. Pakistan and India are two big nuclear powers.”
Trump revealed that the US is also pursuing a trade deal involving both countries and acknowledged the wisdom shown by both leaders in avoiding escalation.
