According to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the total remittances sent by Pakistani workers abroad during the period of July-April 2024-25 reached a staggering US$31.2 billion, compared to US$23.9 billion during the same period in the previous year.
This marked increase in remittances raises questions about the growing number of job opportunities available outside Pakistan, especially in countries like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United Kingdom, and the United States. The data indicates that more and more Pakistanis are finding work abroad, contributing to the country’s economy through their hard-earned money sent back home.

In April 2025 alone, workers’ remittances saw an inflow of US$3.2 billion, reflecting a 13.1 percent year-on-year increase compared to the same month in 2024. The main sources of this money were Saudi Arabia, contributing US$725.4 million; the UAE, contributing US$657.6 million; the United Kingdom, contributing US$535.3 million; and the United States, contributing US$302.4 million. These figures suggest that Pakistanis continue to flock to these countries in search of better job prospects.
The rising remittances could indicate a shift in Pakistan’s labor market. With domestic employment opportunities limited in various sectors due to economic challenges, many Pakistanis are increasingly turning to foreign markets for jobs. The data suggests that the job market outside Pakistan is becoming a more attractive and viable option, particularly for skilled and semi-skilled workers in the Middle East and Western countries.
This increase in remittances is also a reflection of the growing number of Pakistani workers who are establishing themselves in international markets, often due to better wages, improved working conditions, and opportunities for career advancement. The ongoing global demand for labor, especially in the Middle East, Europe, and North America, has opened up more avenues for Pakistani workers to seek employment abroad.
For Pakistan, these remittances are a critical lifeline for the economy, providing vital foreign exchange reserves and supporting local businesses and families. However, the trend also highlights the need for Pakistan to create more sustainable job opportunities within the country. While the remittances are beneficial, they also underscore the necessity of improving local employment conditions and making Pakistan a more attractive place for skilled labor to stay and thrive.
In conclusion, the sharp rise in workers remittances signals not only the growing importance of overseas job markets for Pakistanis but also the need for a broader strategy to create local opportunities. As more Pakistanis seek employment abroad, it is crucial for the government and industries to focus on generating quality jobs within Pakistan to retain talent and foster economic growth.
