(Web Desk): Punjab garbage collection tax may get a major boost as a new force with 305 posts will recover charges from 4.7 million properties.

New force proposed for tax collection

The Punjab government has proposed creating a new force under the Excise and Taxation Department to improve sanitation tax and charge collection across the province. The plan recommends creating 305 new positions to make the collection system more effective.

The proposed force will include 300 Excise and Taxation constables in Grade 5. They will work to collect sanitation charges from around 4.7 million properties across Punjab.

Constables to work across districts

According to the proposal, around seven to eight constables will be assigned to each district for sanitation charge collection. Their work will include delivering bills, following up with people who have not paid and recovering outstanding amounts.

The force will work specifically for the Suthra Punjab programme under the Director General of Excise and Taxation. One director and four deputy directors have also been proposed to supervise the new force.

Electric bikes proposed for field staff

The government has also proposed providing 300 electric motorcycles to field staff involved in sanitation charge collection. These motorcycles are expected to help officials move around more easily while carrying out their duties.

For monitoring and enforcement work, the proposal includes purchasing one 1,300cc car and four Cultus cars. The documents say Rs113,000,000 has been requested for the purchase of the 300 electric motorcycles and five vehicles.

Supplementary grant under consideration

A supplementary grant has also been proposed to cover the cost of the new positions, vehicles and other expenses linked to the force. The proposal is aimed at strengthening the collection system and improving recovery of unpaid sanitation charges.

If approved, the new force could give the government a dedicated field network for collecting sanitation charges from millions of properties. The plan also shows a move towards using dedicated staff and transport to improve enforcement and recovery.

The proposed force could make sanitation charge collection more organised. Dedicated field staff may also help authorities follow up on unpaid bills more effectively.

However, the success of the plan will depend on how efficiently the new staff work in the field. Clear procedures and proper monitoring will be important to ensure that the system delivers better results.
