Punjab approves new hospitals and medical college in south region
Three major health projects
The Punjab government has approved a series of major healthcare projects aimed at expanding specialised medical services in different parts of the province.
The plans include the Maryam Nawaz Medical College, Kulsoom Nawaz Cancer Hospital and Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cardiology.
The Maryam Nawaz Medical College is planned for Mianwali, where the government has also announced the upgrade of the DHQ Hospital into a teaching hospital.
Earlier reports confirmed the medical college plan and related healthcare expansion in the district.
The Kulsoom Nawaz Cancer Hospital is planned for Dera Ghazi Khan. The project has also been included in Punjab’s 2026-27 health allocations, with Rs15.2 billion set aside for the facility.
Meanwhile, the Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cardiology is planned for Gujranwala. A separate report said the cardiac facility was being developed at an estimated cost of Rs16 billion to provide specialised heart treatment in the region.
Mianwali medical college plan
The Mianwali medical college is expected to support both medical education and healthcare services in the district.
The plan for the Maryam Nawaz Medical College follows an earlier announcement by the provincial government to establish a medical college and teaching hospital in Mianwali.
The Mianwali medical college proposal is part of wider efforts to expand health facilities outside major cities.
The government has also been reviewing the use of existing hospital buildings and related facilities for the project.

Cancer treatment in south Punjab
The Dera Ghazi Khan cancer hospital is intended to expand specialised cancer treatment in southern Punjab.
The Kulsoom Nawaz Cancer Hospital has already received a major allocation in the provincial health budget.
The Dera Ghazi Khan cancer hospital could provide residents of the region with greater access to specialised treatment closer to home.
The Kulsoom Nawaz Cancer Hospital is among the major cancer-related healthcare projects included in Punjab’s current development plans.
New cardiac facility in Gujranwala
The Gujranwala cardiac institute is another major part of the planned expansion. The Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cardiology is being developed as a specialised heart-care facility, with officials previously stating that modern equipment and specialised services would be provided there.
The Gujranwala cardiac institute is expected to serve patients from Gujranwala and surrounding districts.
The Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cardiology is part of a broader focus on cardiac treatment in Punjab, which also includes cardiac surgery programmes and cath-lab expansion.
More projects under review
The provincial government is also considering additional healthcare schemes, including a medical college in Layyah and specialised facilities under the proposed Nawaz Sharif Medical District.

The Mianwali medical college remains linked with the wider expansion of teaching hospitals, while the Dera Ghazi Khan cancer hospital is expected to strengthen cancer services in south Punjab.
Similarly, the Gujranwala cardiac institute is part of the province’s wider push to expand specialised heart treatment.
The Kulsoom Nawaz Cancer Hospital and Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cardiology are among the projects receiving attention under the health expansion plans.
