Maryam Nawaz announces 100,000 electric bikes for students
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz chaired a high-level meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department to review Punjab’s green transport projects.
Officials briefed her on electric buses, e-taxis, the Punjab e-bike scheme, electric three-wheelers, mass transit systems, and the province’s growing electric vehicle manufacturing industry.
During the meeting, Maryam Nawaz approved the expansion of the e-bike scheme, under which students will receive electric bikes through the Punjab e-bike scheme on the easiest installment plan.
The government plans to distribute 100,000 electric bikes within one year to make transportation easier and more affordable for young people.
Under the Maryam Nawaz e-bike scheme, the Punjab government will provide a subsidy of Rs70,000 on every electric bike.
Male students will only have to pay a Rs14,000 down payment, followed by an interest-free monthly installment of just Rs2,100.
Female students will receive additional support, as Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced that the government will pay both their down payment and registration fee. Students will only need to pay the Rs2,100 monthly installment.
The Punjab e-bike scheme has also been extended to government employees, who will be able to purchase electric bikes on easy installments under the same financing model.
The meeting also focused on Punjab’s ambitious green transport expansion. The government announced that 5,000 electric buses will be introduced across the province over the next five years.

Officials said Punjab has also entered the electric bus manufacturing sector, with local assembly already underway.
Maryam Nawaz said Punjab is no longer just operating buses but is now manufacturing them as well.
She described the establishment of the electric bus manufacturing industry as a major achievement for the province and a significant step toward industrial growth.
Officials informed the meeting that 1,500 electric buses will operate across 91 tehsils in the first phase. Several buses are ready for immediate launch, while additional vehicles will begin operating in different districts during July. Hundreds more buses are expected to arrive from China later this month.
The government also reviewed progress on the Gujranwala and Faisalabad Mass Transit projects, where construction is continuing rapidly.
Officials presented updated reports, photos, and videos showing work on stations, depots, elevated sections, and other infrastructure.
Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to ensure safety standards are strictly followed during construction and instructed officials to speed up the launch of electric buses in smaller cities and districts to improve public transport across Punjab.
