Punjab school sports set to return with major prize money
The Punjab government has decided to restore sports activities in schools across the province after announcing a major programme of competitions for students.
Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat chaired a meeting where plans for the revival of school sports were discussed.
Under the new programme, schools will take part in mega sports events at different administrative levels.
The competitions will begin at the tehsil level and move towards district, division and provincial-level events.
The government says the programme is designed to give students more opportunities to take part in sports and develop their abilities.
Mega sports events planned across Punjab
The sports programme will run from October to December and involve educational institutions across Punjab.
Competitions will be organised at tehsil, district, division and provincial levels, allowing students to progress through different stages.
This structure is expected to give talented players a chance to compete beyond their local areas.
The final provincial-level event will be hosted by the Lahore Board in December, according to the education minister.
The move is aimed at making sports a more active part of school life and creating a pathway for promising young athletes.
Students who perform well in the competitions could receive further opportunities to represent Punjab and compete at higher levels.
The government has also indicated that successful players will be supported in pursuing opportunities at national and international competitions.
Prize money increased for winning players
The Punjab government has also increased the reward money for winners participating in the sports programme.
According to the announcement, prizes will include Rs100,000, Rs300,000 and Rs500,000.
The different prize amounts are expected to provide an additional incentive for students to take part in competitions and improve their performance.
The announcement could also encourage schools to focus more attention on sports training and student participation.
For young athletes, financial rewards can provide recognition for their hard work and help motivate them to continue developing their sporting skills.
The government’s decision to connect school competitions with national and international opportunities could further increase interest among students.
Sports committees established in 35,000 schools
The education minister said sports committees have been established in all 35,000 schools across Punjab.
These committees are expected to play a role in organising and supporting sports activities within educational institutions.
The establishment of committees across such a large number of schools indicates that the government wants the programme to reach students throughout the province.
Instead of limiting competitions to a small number of schools, the plan provides a wider structure for student participation.
Schools will have an important role in identifying talented players and preparing them for competitions at higher levels.
The programme could also help schools create a more regular sports culture rather than holding activities only on special occasions.

Sports equipment being provided to schools
The government has also started providing sports equipment to schools.
According to the education minister, 450 schools have already received sports equipment.
The availability of proper equipment is important for students who want to train and compete in different sports.
However, the government will need to ensure that equipment reaches schools in different districts and is properly maintained.
The minister also stressed the importance of maintaining the quality of sports kits being provided to students.
“No compromise will be made on the standard of the sports kits,” he stated.
The statement indicates that the government wants students to receive suitable equipment rather than relying on low-quality or inadequate sports gear.
Opportunities beyond school competitions
The planned competitions could provide students with a clearer route from school-level sports to higher-level competition.
Students who perform strongly at tehsil and district competitions may have the opportunity to progress to division and provincial events.
The most successful players could then be considered for national and international competitions.
This approach could help identify talented athletes at an earlier stage and give them more opportunities to develop their skills.
It could also encourage parents and schools to support students who show strong potential in sports.
For many students, school competitions can be the first step towards organised professional or competitive sports.
