Punjab makes bold decision on school teaching interns’ internship period
Internship period extended
The Punjab government has approved the continuation of school teaching interns appointed under Phase One and Phase Two. Their new internship period will run from September 16, 2026, to May 31, 2027.
The decision will allow already appointed STIs to continue their duties under the extended arrangement. The move provides further employment continuity for eligible teaching interns across the province.
New contracts for eligible STIs
Officials have directed that new contracts be issued to STIs whose previous internship period ended on May 31, 2026. All district education authorities in Punjab have also been instructed to prepare and issue the new agreements.
STIs whose contracts have not been terminated will also be allowed to continue their internships. However, interns who resigned or left their posts before May 31, 2026, will not qualify for the extension.
Monthly payment increase approved
The government has also approved an additional monthly payment of Rs15,000 for school teaching interns. The increase will, however, depend on revised terms and conditions.
Officials said the additional payment would be provided under the updated internship arrangements. Eligible interns will need to follow the revised rules attached to their new contracts.
District authorities told to act
The Punjab government has directed all district education authorities to issue new contracts to eligible STIs. The authorities will also be responsible for completing the required administrative process.
The extension is intended to ensure the continuation of teaching services in schools. It will also provide eligible interns with more time to continue their professional experience.
The extension gives eligible STIs more job continuity and a chance to gain further teaching experience. The Rs15,000 monthly increase may also provide financial support, but its implementation will depend on revised conditions.
