As a severe cold wave in Pakistan continues to grip large parts of the country, provincial governments have announced significant changes to school schedules, with Sindh revising school timings and Punjab extending winter vacations to protect students’ health and safety.
The Sindh government has issued an official notification changing school opening hours across the province due to intensifying cold weather. According to the Sindh Education Department, all government and private schools in Sindh will now open at 9:00 am, while closing times and post-class activities will remain unchanged.

Officials said the revised Sindh school timings will take effect from Monday and remain in force until January 26, 2026. The decision aims to shield students from harsh morning temperatures and make commuting safer during the ongoing winter spell. Parents and teachers have been advised to adjust schedules accordingly to ensure uninterrupted academic activities.
In contrast, the Punjab government has opted for stricter measures by announcing a one-week extension in winter vacations for all schools, colleges, and educational institutions across the province. Institutions in Punjab will now reopen on January 19, instead of the earlier planned January 12 reopening.
Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat said the decision was taken after public consultation through a survey conducted on his official social media platform. He emphasized that the move reflects the government’s commitment to prioritizing student well-being amid severe cold, dense fog, and falling temperatures.

Authorities in both provinces stated that the evolving weather situation is being closely monitored, and further decisions may be taken if cold wave conditions persist. Citizens have been urged to follow official advisories and take precautionary measures during the winter season.
