Austria offers journalists €15,000, see who can apply for ISTA residency
Paid journalism residency in Austria
The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) has opened applications for its 2027 Journalist in Residence programme, giving experienced journalists an opportunity to spend three to six months exploring scientific research near Vienna.
The residency will begin in spring 2027 at ISTA’s campus in Klosterneuburg, Austria. Residents will have access to more than 90 research groups and an international community representing over 80 nationalities.
What the programme offers
Selected journalists will receive €15,000 in compensation plus travel expenses. However, accommodation and daily living costs will generally be the responsibility of the participants, although on-campus housing may be available subject to availability.
Participants can attend seminars, lectures and campus events, meet researchers and explore scientific work across fields including artificial intelligence, astrophysics, climate science and quantum mechanics.
ISTA does not require residents to publish during their stay, allowing them to maintain full editorial independence. Journalists are expected to share their professional expertise through media training sessions, workshops and panel discussions.
Application deadline
Experienced science and technology journalists working in any format can apply. English is ISTA’s working language, but journalists working in other languages are also encouraged to submit applications.
Applicants must submit a CV, cover letter, work samples, residency proposal and the names of two or three ISTA research groups they want to engage with.
The application deadline is November 1, 2026.
