(Web Desk): Pakistan Railways has installed its first AI-based security system at Rawalpindi Railway Station. More than 180 cameras will monitor the station round the clock, covering tracks, parking areas, ticket offices and platforms. A central database will store the system’s data.

Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi inaugurated the “Safe and Smart” system, calling it the first AI deployment in the history of Pakistan Railways.

The camera network will track movement across the station at all hours. Faces will be identified and matched against the central database. System manager Muhammad Ali said the database will strengthen the railway’s ability to make operational decisions. He added that vehicle number-plate recognition and facial data will allow tracing of a person from the parking area until they board a train.

Officials say the system can help prevent sabotage. The facial data fed into the system can be used to blacklist suspects and trigger alerts if a wanted person or someone flagged as a threat enters the station.

The Frontier Works Organization (FWO) has installed the system at Rawalpindi as a pilot. Authorities plan to extend the system to other railway stations in the future.
