(Web Desk): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif took swift action during a surprise visit to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Pakpattan following the tragic deaths of 20 newborn babies.

The incident of deaths of 20 newborn babies has sparked public outrage and prompted a high-level investigation into the state of healthcare facilities in the district.

As per initial reports, the deceased infants were referred to the DHQ Hospital from various private hospitals, where they were born. A preliminary inquiry conducted by the Health Department and the Commissioner of Sahiwal Division has been completed, with findings indicating gross negligence and substandard practices at private medical facilities and among untrained birth attendants.

According to sources, 15 of the infants were born in private hospitals, while 5 died due to complications related to unsafe deliveries conducted by untrained midwives. The babies were later shifted to the DHQ Hospital in critical condition, many without their mothers, and several died soon after arrival.

Meanwhile, a clinical audit of the admissions and treatment times of the deceased infants has been conducted. Reports confirm no shortage of oxygen, as 45 cylinders were available in the hospital at the time.

In response to the findings, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz ordered the arrest of Medical Superintendent Dr. Adnan Ghaffar and CEO Health Dr. Sohail Asghar, holding them accountable for systemic failures and mismanagement at the government facility.

During her hospital visit, CM Maryam Nawaz personally engaged with patients and their families, who voiced their anger over the unavailability of even basic medicines like aspirin, forcing them to purchase drugs from outside pharmacies. The Chief Minister listened attentively to their grievances and assured them of strict accountability.

In a parallel move, the Health Department sealed four private hospitals—Al-Fareed Hospital, Doctor Hospital, Shahid Hospital, and Ali Hospital—after discovering violations and malpractice. Their operation theatres have also been sealed.
