Dark Chocolate may help lower Blood Pressure, study suggests
Hypertension, defined as blood pressure consistently above 140/90 mmHg, significantly raises the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular diseases. Health experts emphasize that South Asians are particularly vulnerable due to factors such as diet, lifestyle habits, and higher sodium intake.
According to recent findings, dark chocolate contains flavonoids, natural compounds known to support heart health. These compounds help relax and widen blood vessels, improving blood flow and potentially lowering blood pressure. Cocoa-rich products, especially dark chocolate and cocoa powder, are among the best sources of flavonoids, while milk chocolate contains considerably lower amounts.
Researchers note that flavonoids stimulate the production of nitric oxide in the body, a substance that promotes vasodilation, or the widening of blood vessels. This process can contribute to modest reductions in blood pressure, particularly in individuals already diagnosed with hypertension.
However, experts caution against viewing chocolate as a cure. The benefits appear to be limited and inconsistent across studies, and excessive consumption may introduce unwanted sugar and fat into the diet.
Health professionals continue to stress that overall lifestyle changes, including a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, along with reduced salt intake, remain the most effective approach to controlling blood pressure.
While dark chocolate may offer some supportive benefits, moderation and regular medical monitoring are essential for those at risk.
