PM Shehbaz orders probe into inactive PIMS CT angiography facility
PM orders inquiry into PIMS facility
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the failure to make the CT angiography facility operational at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
The prime minister has formed a special inquiry committee to investigate why the facility has remained inactive and determine who is responsible.
The committee will examine the facts surrounding the facility and submit its findings to the government. Officials found responsible could face action under the law.
The Secretary of the Establishment Division has been appointed chairman of the inquiry committee. The committee will now review the relevant records and operational details at PIMS.
Committee to examine angiography records
A major part of the inquiry will focus on the technical capacity for conducting CT angiograms that has reportedly been available at PIMS since 2022.
The committee will also examine records of all angiograms conducted at the hospital during the same period. This review is expected to help determine whether the available facilities were properly used.
Officials will also examine how patients were referred between the cardiology and radiology departments. The referral system is considered important because both departments are involved in the diagnosis and management of patients requiring such tests.
The inquiry will therefore look beyond the equipment itself. It will also examine whether administrative or coordination problems contributed to the facility remaining inactive.

Strict action possible after findings
The government has indicated that strict legal action will be taken if the inquiry identifies officials responsible for negligence or other violations.
The committee’s report is expected to provide details about the reasons behind the delay and identify any shortcomings in the hospital’s management or procedures.
The National Health Services Division will also assist the inquiry committee during the investigation. Its involvement is intended to help provide technical and administrative support.
