LAHORE (Web Desk): Punjab has issued a health alert over COVID-19 and seasonal flu, asking hospitals to remain prepared for a possible rise in patients as respiratory illnesses and flu-like symptoms raise concerns.

Punjab issues health alert over flu, COVID-19

The Punjab government has alerted chief executive officers and medical superintendents across the province over concerns related to COVID-19 and seasonal flu.

Officials have warned hospitals that outpatient departments and other wards could see more patients in the coming days.

Medical facilities have been directed to remain prepared and ensure that available resources are used to manage patients.

The alert comes as changing weather conditions can increase the spread of respiratory infections.

Health authorities are also urging people to take basic precautions to reduce the risk of infection.

Hospitals told to remain prepared

Hospitals across Punjab have been asked to remain alert to a possible increase in patients suffering from respiratory illnesses. The main symptoms being reported include fever, persistent cough, breathing difficulties, body aches and other flu-like signs.

Health officials are expected to monitor patient numbers and ensure that hospitals can deal with any additional pressure. The warning is particularly important for large government hospitals, where a sudden increase in patients can put pressure on emergency departments and outpatient services.

A recent report has also highlighted a broader rise in patient visits to public hospitals across Punjab, although the increase covers several types of illnesses and cannot be linked specifically to COVID-19 or seasonal flu.

Lahore hospitals see patients with respiratory symptoms

Hospitals in Lahore are reportedly receiving more patients with fever, cough, breathing problems and body aches. Doctors are also seeing people with symptoms that resemble seasonal flu and other respiratory infections. However, these symptoms alone cannot confirm whether a patient has COVID-19.

Several respiratory illnesses can cause similar symptoms, making proper medical assessment important. Health experts have therefore advised people not to assume that every case of fever or cough is linked to coronavirus.

COVID-19 figures remain unclear

The exact number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Punjab remains unclear.

According to the information available, government teaching hospitals are reportedly not conducting routine COVID-19 tests in the same way as during earlier stages of the pandemic.

Claims that more than 2,000 patients were reported within 24 hours have also not been independently verified.

Health authorities have not confirmed that all such patients were suffering from COVID-19. This makes it difficult to determine the actual scale of any current increase in coronavirus cases.

The distinction is important because fever, cough, body aches and breathing problems can also be caused by influenza and other respiratory infections.

Flu can be more serious for high-risk groups

The Punjab government has highlighted the risks faced by people who are more vulnerable to complications from flu. Pregnant women, older people and those living with chronic illnesses can face a greater risk of severe influenza.

The World Health Organization also identifies pregnant women, older adults and people with certain chronic medical conditions among the groups at higher risk of serious complications from seasonal influenza.

Children and healthcare workers are also among the groups that can face increased risks from influenza. For this reason, health experts encourage people in high-risk groups to seek medical advice when symptoms become severe or persistent.

Vaccination remains an important protection

The government has advised citizens to consider flu vaccination as an important preventive measure.

WHO recommends seasonal influenza vaccination for priority groups, including pregnant women, older adults and people with chronic health conditions. WHO guidance also says influenza vaccination is the best way to reduce the risk of severe illness from seasonal flu.

Vaccination does not mean that a person can never become infected, but it can help reduce the risk of serious disease. People should consult healthcare professionals about vaccination, particularly those who are pregnant, elderly or living with chronic medical conditions.

Masks and handwashing can reduce spread

Citizens have also been advised to wear masks in crowded places and maintain good hygiene. Regular handwashing can help reduce the spread of respiratory infections. People should also avoid close contact with others when they are unwell.

WHO recommends measures such as improving ventilation, avoiding crowded and enclosed spaces, cleaning hands regularly and wearing a mask in crowded settings when sick. These measures can help limit the spread of influenza and other respiratory infections.

Changing weather raises respiratory concerns

Weather changes can contribute to the spread of seasonal respiratory illnesses.

As temperatures shift, more people may experience flu-like symptoms and other respiratory problems. However, not every seasonal increase in respiratory illness represents a new COVID-19 wave.

Doctors therefore recommend paying attention to symptoms and seeking medical care when breathing problems, persistent fever or other serious symptoms develop. People with existing health conditions should be particularly careful.

Health experts urge people not to ignore symptoms

Experts have advised people with respiratory symptoms to take precautions rather than continuing normal activities while sick.

Those experiencing mild symptoms should rest, stay hydrated and follow basic hygiene measures. People should seek medical attention if symptoms become severe, persist for a long period or include difficulty breathing.

Patients in high-risk groups should also contact their doctors earlier if they develop significant flu-like symptoms. Early medical advice can help doctors identify patients who may need additional treatment.

Hospitals face possible increase in patient load

The latest alert is also aimed at helping hospitals prepare before patient numbers rise further.

Emergency departments and outpatient clinics can become crowded when respiratory infections spread quickly. Keeping staff, medicines, beds and other essential facilities available can help hospitals manage such pressure.

The provincial authorities have therefore asked hospital administrations to remain vigilant and make the best use of available facilities. The actual level of COVID-19 transmission, however, will remain difficult to assess without adequate testing and confirmed case data.

What people should do

People experiencing fever, cough, body aches or breathing difficulties should monitor their symptoms carefully.

Wearing a mask in crowded or poorly ventilated places can reduce the risk of spreading respiratory infections. Frequent handwashing and better ventilation can also help.

People should avoid crowded spaces when they are sick and limit close contact with vulnerable family members. Pregnant women, older adults and people with chronic illnesses should take particular care and seek medical advice when symptoms become concerning.
