Karachi mpox cases rise to 11 as new infection confirmed in Landhi
Another case of monkeypox (mpox) has been confirmed in Karachi, raising the total number of reported infections in the city to 11, according to health authorities on Monday.
Hospital officials at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital (SIDH) NIPA said a 35-year-old resident of Mohabbat Nagar, Landhi, tested positive for the virus and has been shifted to the isolation ward for treatment and monitoring.
The patient visited the hospital on Saturday after developing symptoms consistent with mpox infection. Medical staff conducted initial screening and later confirmed the diagnosis through a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test.
Officials added that the patient has no recent travel history, suggesting possible local transmission, though investigations are still ongoing.
With this latest case, the number of mpox patients currently under treatment at SIDH NIPA has risen to eight, while others are being monitored in separate facilities across the city.
Earlier, health authorities had also reported another confirmed case involving a 40-year-old resident of Gulistan-e-Johar. That patient, like the latest case, had no recent travel history and was admitted to isolation after testing positive.
Health officials are closely monitoring the situation and have advised the public to remain cautious and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.
Mpox is a viral disease that spreads through close physical contact, contaminated materials, or infected animals. Common symptoms include fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and a skin rash.
The disease gained global attention during the 2022–23 outbreak and continues to be monitored by international and local health agencies.
