Pakistan likely to observe 2-day public holidays on Muharram
Pakistan is expected to observe two nationwide public holidays on the 9th and 10th of Muharram-ul-Haram 1448 AH, marking the religious occasion of Ashura, according to preliminary astronomical forecasts.
However, the final confirmation of these holidays will depend on the official announcement of the Muharram moon sighting by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee after its scheduled meeting.
According to early astronomical estimates and space experts, the 9th and 10th of Muharram are likely to fall on June 25 and June 26, 2026. If the forecast proves accurate, Ashura is expected to be observed on Friday, June 26.
The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has indicated that the chances of sighting the Muharram crescent on June 15 are very limited. If the moon is not sighted, the Islamic month of Muharram is expected to begin on June 17, completing 30 days of Zilhajj 1447 AH.
Once the moon sighting is officially confirmed, the federal government will issue a notification declaring public holidays for 9th and 10th Muharram. During these days, all government offices, private institutions, banks, and educational establishments across the country are expected to remain closed.
Ashura holds deep religious significance in Islam, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in the battle of Karbala. Across Pakistan, religious gatherings, processions, and mourning events are expected to be held during the first ten days of Muharram.
Authorities are likely to enhance security arrangements nationwide to ensure peaceful observance of Muharram rituals.
