(Web Desk): The Odyssey has crossed the $1bn mark worldwide, becoming the fifth film of 2026 to reach the major box office milestone after three successful weeks in cinemas.

Christopher Nolan’s epic film, which opened on July 17, has earned $429.65 million in the United States and $578.8 million from international markets.

Together, the film’s global earnings have moved slightly above $1bn, placing it among the year’s biggest commercial successes.

The achievement is also an important milestone for Nolan. The Odyssey is his first film to cross $1bn since The Dark Knight Rises reached about $1.08bn during its theatrical run in 2012.

Imax gives The Odyssey a major boost

Imax screenings have played an important role in the film’s strong performance. The movie has collected $257 million from Imax screens alone.

The Odyssey was specifically filmed for the large-format experience, helping attract audiences looking for a more immersive cinema experience.

With the film still playing in theatres, it could eventually become the highest-grossing movie ever released on Imax screens.

The strong Imax performance also shows that premium cinema formats continue to attract audiences despite the growing popularity of streaming services.

Nolan could set another personal record

The Odyssey is also on track to become Nolan’s highest-grossing movie if its earnings continue to rise.

His previous film, Oppenheimer, earned around $975 million worldwide. That means The Odyssey has already moved beyond that figure and could widen the gap as its theatrical run continues.

The upcoming release in China could provide another major boost to the film’s earnings.

China remains one of the world’s biggest movie markets, and The Odyssey is scheduled to open there on Friday. The film is expected to screen on nearly 800 Imax screens across the country, along with thousands of regular cinema screens.

That release could push the film well beyond the $1bn milestone and strengthen its position among the year’s biggest releases.

Fifth billion-dollar movie of 2026

The Odyssey is now the fifth movie released in 2026 to cross $1bn in global ticket sales.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day leads the group with $1.18bn and counting, while Toy Story 5 has earned about $1.067bn.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael have each crossed the $1bn mark, with both sitting around $1.001bn.

The success of Michael is particularly notable because it surpassed Oppenheimer to become the highest-grossing biopic ever.

The growing number of billion-dollar releases suggests that audiences are once again turning out in large numbers for major theatrical films.

Cinema recovery gains momentum

The performance of The Odyssey comes during a wider recovery for cinemas following the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

2026 has already produced more billion-dollar films than any other post-pandemic year. The number could increase further if other major releases maintain their current momentum.

However, the record still belongs to 2019, when nine movies crossed the $1bn mark worldwide.

The current trend suggests that big-budget films with strong global appeal can still generate enormous theatrical revenues.
