Mawra Hocane has described the ongoing condition as “heartbreaking” and urgent.
Sharing an image of long queues of loaded trucks carrying families and their belongings, Mawra highlighted the emotional and humanitarian impact of more than one million Afghans returning this year.
In her note, she said she was proud of Pakistan’s history of sheltering people seeking safety for generations but added that 2025 has brought distressing scenes.
She wrote that many of those leaving include children separated from their parents, political opposition members, and minorities who fear for their safety.
Mawra urged that Pakistan “must not turn its back now” and should continue supporting vulnerable families with the help of UNHCR Pakistan and global humanitarian partners.
