LAHORE (Web Desk): Novelist Elif Shafak has been elected president of Britain’s Royal Society of Literature (RSL), after a vote at the society’s Annual General Meeting on Thursday.

Shafak replaced Bernadine Evaristo, who completed her four-year term and described Shafak as “a terrifically inspired choice.” Evaristo praised her as “a global bestseller with a renowned reputation as a writer, intellectual, and public speaker,” and highlighted her advocacy for literature as a bridge between cultures.

Shafak said she was “very touched and humbled” by the appointment. She emphasized starting her tenure by listening to “the thoughts and suggestions of my fellow writers and poets.”

In an Instagram post, Shafak called the RSL “a much-needed sanctuary, an oasis, a space of togetherness, empathy, inspiration and creativity,” especially in an “increasingly turbulent and harsh world.” She added that fellowship also means “companionship, solidarity, togetherness,” which is crucial in today’s challenging times.

The author stressed the growing challenges facing writers, librarians, and others dedicated to “the love of literature,” and expressed her desire to support them during her tenure.

Shafak has been serving as vice-president of the society since 2020. She has authored 21 books, including 13 novels, writing in Turkish and English. Her popular works include ‘The Forty Rules of Love’ and ‘The Bastard of Istanbul’, translated into 58 languages.

Several of her books have been recognized with literary honors. Two were shortlisted for the RSL Ondaatje Prize, and her 2019 novel, 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
