(Web Desk): Overseas Pakistanis sent record $7.3 billion in remittances during the first two months of fiscal year 2026-27, giving Pakistan a strong start to the year.

The latest figures from the State Bank of Pakistan show that overseas workers continued sending large amounts of money home during August.

Remittances reached $3.7 billion in August, marking a 16.5% increase compared with the same month last year.

The monthly figure also showed a rise of 0.7% compared with July. While the month-on-month increase was modest, the overall flow remained strong.

The combined amount received during July and August reached $7.3 billion. This was 14.7% higher than the $6.4 billion received during the same period of the previous fiscal year.

The figures are important for Pakistan because remittances provide a major source of foreign exchange. They also help support the country’s external account and improve the availability of dollars in the economy.

Saudi Arabia remains the biggest source

Saudi Arabia remained the largest source of remittances to Pakistan during August.

Overseas Pakistanis in the kingdom sent $870 million during the month. This made Saudi Arabia the top contributor among the major countries sending money to Pakistan.

The United Arab Emirates was the second-largest source. Pakistan received $749.8 million from overseas Pakistanis living in the UAE.

The United Kingdom also made a significant contribution, sending $563.7 million during August.

Remittances from the United States stood at $308.9 million during the month. Together, these major markets continued to provide a large share of Pakistan’s monthly inflows.

$7.3 billion reached in two months

The $7.3 billion received during July and August means Pakistan reached the amount linked with the two-month target under its IMF programme.

The achievement comes as the country continues to focus on strengthening foreign exchange reserves and maintaining stability in its external finances.

Compared with the previous fiscal year, the improvement is clear. Pakistan received $6.4 billion during July and August last year, meaning inflows have increased by 14.7% this year.

The rise also highlights the continued role of overseas Pakistanis in supporting the country’s economy.

Millions of Pakistanis work abroad and regularly send part of their earnings to their families. These transfers also bring valuable foreign currency into the country.

August remittances show strong momentum

The August figure of $3.7 billion is particularly important because it represents a 16.5% increase from August last year.

The State Bank said remittances also increased slightly from the previous month. The 0.7% month-on-month rise suggests that inflows remained steady as the new fiscal year began.

Strong remittance flows can provide some relief to Pakistan’s foreign exchange position. They can also reduce pressure on the country’s external financing needs.

However, monthly figures can change because of seasonal patterns, overseas employment conditions and other economic factors. The performance over several months will provide a clearer picture of the overall trend.

For now, the opening two months have produced a stronger result than the same period last year.
