(Web Desk): The federal government is considering a petroleum smart lockdown to reduce fuel use as petroleum prices continue to rise.

Government reviews fuel-saving measures

A meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reviewed the effects of rising petroleum prices. Officials also discussed different proposals to reduce transport activity and fuel consumption across the country.

The proposals aim to limit unnecessary travel and reduce the pressure of higher fuel prices on citizens. However, the government has not yet made a final decision on the plan.

Four-day workweek under consideration

According to media reports, the proposed smart lockdown may allow government and private offices to operate for four days a week. Friday, Saturday and Sunday could be declared holidays under the proposal.

The suggested arrangement is intended to reduce daily commuting and petrol consumption. It could also help lower transport-related expenses for workers and institutions.

Rotational office attendance proposed

The government is also considering a rotational attendance system for public-sector employees. Under this plan, different groups of employees would attend offices on assigned days.

The arrangement could reduce the number of people travelling to workplaces at the same time. Officials are reviewing how such a system could affect public services and office operations.

Possible reduction in government vehicles

The meeting also discussed grounding around 50 per cent of government vehicles to reduce fuel use. The proposal is aimed at cutting official transport expenses during the period of rising petroleum prices.

The government is reviewing the complete plan and its possible effects. A final decision on the petroleum smart lockdown was expected later in the evening.

The proposed smart lockdown is focused on reducing travel and saving fuel. Its success would depend on proper planning, public cooperation and ensuring that essential government services continue without disruption.
