(Web Desk): Diesel price in Pakistan is set to drop by more than Rs32 per litre after local refineries agreed to a major reduction. What’s about petrol?

The final rate will be decided by OGRA after completing its calculations. Federal Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced the expected reduction during a press conference in Islamabad. He said the government was aware of the financial pressure on consumers and was working to provide relief.

Refineries agree to government request

Malik said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had also asked refineries to reduce diesel prices. Following the request, the government held several virtual meetings with refinery representatives.

“I am happy to announce that the refineries have accepted the government’s demand while acknowledging the difficulties, and decided on a significant decrease of more than Rs. 30 or Rs 32 in the diesel price,” Malik said. He added, “After some time, you will see that OGRA, after its calculations, will finalise it.”

The minister said refineries had agreed to reduce the price by around Rs30 to more than Rs32 per litre. If the full reduction reaches consumers, diesel prices could see a significant drop at petrol stations.

Diesel recently became more expensive

The expected relief comes soon after the government increased the HSD price by Rs5.27 per litre. The new diesel rate reached Rs395.69 per litre from August 19, while petrol increased by Rs3.34 to Rs334.54 per litre.

If the full Rs32 reduction is passed on to consumers, diesel could fall to around Rs363.69 per litre. However, the final retail price will depend on the official notification, taxes and other pricing components.

Why fuel prices are under pressure

Malik linked recent petroleum price pressure to the escalation of regional conflict. Higher international energy costs and supply challenges have added pressure to fuel markets.

He said several countries were facing difficulties in securing diesel supplies. The government is also working to maintain sufficient fuel availability in Pakistan.

Daily pricing system in place

Pakistan has moved to a daily petroleum pricing mechanism amid continued volatility in international oil markets. Under the system, OGRA reviews prices using international oil prices, exchange-rate movements and other relevant costs.

The mechanism allows petroleum prices to respond more quickly to changes in global markets. The final domestic rates can also be affected by taxes and other government pricing components.

Government pushes local refining

The government is also encouraging greater use of domestic refining capacity. Petroleum sector upgrades are aimed at increasing local diesel production and reducing reliance on imported fuel.

Higher local production could help Pakistan reduce its exposure to international supply disruptions. It may also provide greater stability for the domestic fuel market over time.

Diesel cut could affect transport costs

A major reduction in diesel prices could have a wider impact because HSD is widely used by heavy transport and commercial vehicles. Agriculture, industry and other businesses also depend heavily on diesel.

Cheaper diesel could reduce transportation and logistics costs for businesses. Lower fuel expenses may also help ease pressure on the prices of goods and agricultural inputs.

Final price still uncertain

Despite the announcement, consumers will have to wait for the official rate before knowing the exact reduction. The refinery decision does not automatically mean the full amount will reach retail customers.

OGRA’s calculations and other pricing components will determine the final price. The coming announcement will therefore show whether consumers receive the full expected relief or a smaller reduction.

The expected diesel cut could provide important relief for consumers and businesses if most of the reduction reaches the retail market. Transporters and farmers could be among the sectors to benefit most from lower diesel costs.

However, the final impact will depend on the official price announced by OGRA. Taxes, international prices and other costs could affect how much consumers actually save.

For now, the refinery agreement is a positive development for diesel users. The key question is how much the price will finally fall at petrol stations.
