Karachi Airport commercial revenue crosses Rs10bn milestone
Karachi Airport has recorded a major rise in commercial revenue, with annual earnings from its commercial operations now exceeding Rs10 billion, according to sources at the Pakistan Airports Authority.
The increase reflects a broader effort to improve the financial performance of Pakistan’s major airports. Officials said new commercial measures and investment by major brands helped increase earnings at Karachi Airport.
Monthly commercial revenue at Karachi Airport has also crossed Rs833.3 million, showing the growing importance of commercial activities alongside aviation operations.
The latest figures are particularly notable because the commercial department’s annual revenue stood at around Rs5 billion in 2023. The department has now more than doubled that figure.
Major airports record billions in earnings
The Ministry of Aviation has also shared a wider breakdown of airport revenues with the National Assembly.
According to the ministry’s written response, Jinnah International Airport in Karachi generated Rs40 billion over the past three fiscal years. Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore recorded Rs44 billion during the same period.
Islamabad International Airport recorded the highest revenue among the three major airports, generating Rs46 billion over the past three fiscal years.
The figures highlight the significant financial role played by Pakistan’s major airports. They also show why the government is focusing more attention on improving airport management and commercial performance.
Major brands boost Karachi Airport revenue
According to Pakistan Airports Authority sources, the commercial department introduced several measures to increase income at Karachi Airport.
The strategy encouraged major brands to invest at the airport, creating new commercial opportunities and helping raise overall revenue.
The department’s approach appears to have strengthened Karachi Airport’s position as an important commercial location. Its large passenger base provides businesses with access to a wide range of customers.
Officials expect the airport’s commercial income to increase further in the coming period. More investment and additional commercial partnerships could provide another boost to revenue.
Government plans airport outsourcing
The aviation ministry has also indicated that the government wants to improve the performance of major airports through private-sector participation.
Plans focus on outsourcing the management of the Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad airports. However, the ownership of the airport properties will remain with the Civil Aviation Authority.
The government believes improved management and commercial expertise could help increase revenue while raising operational standards.
The move is part of a wider strategy to make existing airports more financially efficient rather than immediately building new major facilities.
No new greenfield airports planned
The ministry has clarified that there are currently no plans to build a new greenfield airport in Sindh or Balochistan.
Instead, authorities are focusing on improving existing airports and increasing their revenue-generating capacity.
This approach could allow the government to make better use of infrastructure that is already available while reducing the need for large new construction projects.
The focus on existing airports also comes as the government looks for ways to strengthen the aviation sector and improve its financial performance.
Gwadar airport and international flights
The aviation ministry has also highlighted the development of New Gwadar International Airport.
The airport was expected to become operational in December 2023, marking an important development for aviation connectivity in Balochistan.
At the same time, direct flight operations from Pakistan to Europe and the United Kingdom remain a major challenge.
The aviation ministry said direct operations to these destinations had been suspended in July 2020 following restrictions imposed by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency.
The ministry did not provide a specific timeline for the full resumption of direct flights. However, it said efforts were continuing to address the issue.
The return of direct European and UK flights would be significant for Pakistan’s aviation industry. It could improve international connectivity and create additional opportunities for airlines and airports.

What the revenue figures mean
The combined figures show that Pakistan’s major airports generate substantial income and have considerable commercial potential.
Karachi Airport’s commercial revenue crossing Rs10 billion annually is especially notable compared with its Rs5 billion figure in 2023.
The wider airport earnings reported to the National Assembly also underline the importance of improving management, attracting investment and expanding commercial activities.
The government’s proposed outsourcing model could bring further changes to how the country’s busiest airports are operated.
