LAHORE (Web Desk): The government is preparing new legislation and a stricter regulatory framework to limit used car imports, a move aimed at supporting local manufacturing and stabilizing the auto sector.

The plan was reviewed in a detailed meeting between Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, and a delegation of the auto industry.

In the meeting, Secretary Industries Saif Anjum and Engineering Development Board CEO Hammad Mansoor were also present.

Representatives from the Pakistan Auto Manufacturers Association (PAMA) said that without tax reforms and tighter controls on used car imports, the local industry would continue to struggle.

“Only those used vehicles that meet safety and environmental standards will be allowed to enter Pakistan,” Khan stated.

He added that enhanced competition and better regulations would push the industry toward more efficient, cost-effective local manufacturing while ensuring consumer protection.

Secretary Industries Saif Anjum said the existing safeguards for commercial imports would remain unchanged. This includes the condition of three years of overseas residency and at least one year of vehicle registration in the owner’s name for eligibility.

To tighten monitoring further, the government plans mandatory ‘pre-shipment inspections’ to verify safety and quality standards before the vehicles reach Pakistan.
