Russia has approved the import of fish and seafood from Pakistan, marking a major breakthrough for the country’s fisheries sector, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said on Friday.

The minister called it a historic development, saying Pakistan has now officially entered the Russian seafood market for the first time. He said this move is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s export base and create new trade opportunities.

According to the minister, 16 Pakistani companies have already been granted permission to export seafood to Russia. He added that this access could further expand trade links with countries in the Eurasian Economic Union.

Officials said the Marine Fisheries Department is ensuring that all exports meet strict international quality standards. This step is aimed at improving competitiveness in global markets.

The minister said Pakistan’s annual seafood exports, currently worth over $500 million, could rise to $800 million after entering the Russian market. He also estimated that exports to Russia alone could generate around $300 million in revenue.

He added that seafood shipments will be sent through sea, air, and land routes. Improved land connectivity with Central Asian states is expected to make trade more cost-effective and efficient.

Officials noted strong demand for Pakistani fish in countries such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. Pakistan’s ports are also playing an important role in supporting regional trade flows.

Experts believe Pakistan’s warm-water seafood has strong potential in international markets. They say better infrastructure and compliance with global standards could further increase export earnings.
