OSLO: (Web Desk) Salwan Momika, a former Iraqi militia leader who has been in the spotlight for his anti-Islam stance and burning of the Quran, has been found dead in his home in Norway days after he reached there by permanently leaving Sweden, as per Radio Geneva.

As per social media reports, the lifeless body of 37-year-old Salwan Momika was discovered at his residence in Norway.

Even hours after reports first emerged that Salwan Momika had been found dead, there was no official reaction from Norway. Momika, who gained global prominence and notoriety for championing "free speech" and the public burning of the Quran, had recently moved to Norway from Sweden.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, as initial investigations have failed to determine the cause.

The news of Momika’s untimely demise was initially reported by Radio Geneva through a tweet that garnered significant attention.

However, the tweet was later deleted, leaving the public uncertain. Radio Geneva has pledged to verify the authenticity of the reports as speculation continues.

The controversial figure’s journey to infamy started when he migrated to Sweden in 2018, fleeing Iraq, and was granted residency in 2021.

However, his controversial actions, including burning pages from the Holy Quran outside a mosque in June 2023, led to the rejection of his asylum application by Swedish authorities. Consequently, Momika relocated to Norway just last month.

His public demonstrations, such as stomping on and desecrating the Holy Quran outside Stockholm’s largest mosque during Eid festivities in 2023, sparked widespread condemnation and debates on the boundaries of free expression.

Described as a Christian-turned-atheist, Salwan Momika identified himself as a “liberal atheist critic and thinker.”

While some celebrated his actions as courageous exercises of free speech, they faced fierce opposition from religious groups and human rights advocates who denounced them as inflammatory and disrespectful.
