In a major step toward sustainable transport, the Punjab government has announced plans to establish 2,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the province. The initiative is part of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s broader vision to modernize public transportation and promote eco-friendly mobility.
The plan was discussed during a video conference chaired by Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman. Officials from the transport and health departments, as well as divisional commissioners and LDA representatives, joined the meeting. Zaman directed deputy commissioners to identify suitable locations for both EV charging stations and bus depots within their areas.

This infrastructure expansion will support the rollout of 600 new electric buses following the success of the e-bus service launched in Lahore earlier this year. The government had previously introduced 27 e-buses in the provincial capital, with plans to increase the fleet to 500 by August.
Officials emphasized that these charging stations are crucial for the long-term sustainability and efficiency of Punjab s electric bus system. The project not only aims to offer modern, comfortable transport but also reduce reliance on fossil fuels and cut urban air pollution.
By investing in EV infrastructure, the Punjab government is positioning itself as a leader in clean transportation. This move complements its broader environmental strategy, including a Vehicle Emission Testing program and other initiatives to combat smog and improve air quality across the region.
