NEW YORK: (Suno News) The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a resolution of Pakistan against Islamophobia with a majority vote.

The resolution called for concerted action to fight ongoing violence against Muslims.

It also requested the UN secretary-general to appoint a special envoy to combat Islamophobia.

The resolution, titled: 'Measures to Combat Islamophobia', was passed by a vote of 113 in favour to none against, with 44 abstentions.

India and most of the European states abstained on the resolution. Before adopting the resolution, the 193-member UNGA rejected two amendments proposed by a group of European nations.

Earlier, Pakistan’s permanent representative to UNGA Munir Akram presented the resolution on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

While presenting the resolution, Munir Akram said that the incidents of Islamophobia and violence against Muslims had risen exponentially both at societal and state levels.
