(Web Desk): The UAE has suspended trade, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions with Iran after authorities reported two ballistic missiles launched from Iran toward maritime traffic.

The UAE Foreign Ministry said the decision came amid a regional escalation that it said was threatening regional and international peace and security. The move marks a major step in the UAE’s response to rising tensions with Iran. It comes after the UAE Defence Ministry reported detecting two ballistic missiles launched from Iran.

Two missiles detected near UAE

The UAE Defence Ministry said on Tuesday that it had detected two ballistic missiles launched from Iran.

According to the ministry, the missiles were assessed to have been targeting “maritime traffic”. Both missiles fell into the sea, and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties linked to the incident.

The UAE said its defence systems and authorities remained prepared to respond to threats against the country. The incident was the first such reported development since a May 4 strike on Fujairah port, according to Reuters.

Iran rejects UAE’s accusation

Iran has rejected the UAE’s account of the missile launches.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei described the UAE’s statement as “baseless”.

Baghaei also urged regional countries to avoid what he called “unsubstantiated accusations” against Iran.

He said assessments of regional developments should also take into account what Iran describes as continued actions by the United States and Israel. Iran has not accepted responsibility for the missile launches reported by the UAE.

UAE orders economic restrictions

Following the latest security development, the UAE announced a broad suspension of economic dealings with Iran.

The measures cover trade activities, commercial exchanges and financial transactions. The Foreign Ministry said the restrictions would remain in place until further notice.

The decision could affect businesses and financial institutions involved in commercial dealings between the two countries. The UAE has not announced a specific timeline for lifting the measures.

Tensions rise over Strait of Hormuz

The latest development comes as tensions remain high around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes. The UAE has recently accused Iran of attacking vessels linked to the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company while they were travelling through the strait.

The UAE Foreign Ministry previously said two national oil tankers were targeted by Iranian cruise missiles while passing through the southern shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has not claimed responsibility for the attacks on the ADNOC-linked vessels. The incidents have added to concerns about the safety of commercial shipping in the region.

Shipping faces growing pressure

The Strait of Hormuz has become a major focus of the wider regional crisis because of its importance to global energy and shipping.

Recent disruptions have significantly reduced maritime traffic through the waterway. Reuters reported that shipping activity through the strait had slowed sharply amid growing tensions and attacks on vessels.

Any further disruption could affect shipping costs, energy supplies and international trade. The UAE has repeatedly stressed the importance of keeping maritime routes open and ensuring freedom of navigation.

US-Iran talks fail to produce breakthrough

The latest missile incident also comes after a 60-day period for US-Iran peace talks ended without a breakthrough. The lack of progress has increased fears that tensions could rise further.

The continuing dispute over the Strait of Hormuz has also added pressure to efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions. The UAE’s decision to suspend economic dealings with Iran could further complicate relations between the two countries.

UAE warns against threats to security

The UAE Defence Ministry said it remained fully prepared to deal with threats to the country’s security. Authorities also issued alerts to residents following the reported missile threat.

The UAE Interior Ministry later informed residents that the situation was safe and advised them to resume normal activities. The authorities’ response indicates that security agencies are closely monitoring developments amid the regional escalation.

What happens next?

The UAE’s suspension of trade and financial transactions with Iran will remain in effect until further notice. The next steps could depend on developments in regional security and whether tensions around maritime traffic ease.

Any further missile incidents or attacks on commercial vessels could increase pressure on relations between the UAE and Iran. For businesses, the immediate concern will be the effect of the restrictions on trade, payments and other commercial activities involving Iran.
